| • | the cost of staple and healthy food is rising |
| • | healthy food is already inaccessible to 400,000 (6.2%) of NSW residents |
| • | obesity levels are high; diabetes is affecting Australians at younger ages |
| • | we are losing productive agricultural land on the urban fringe |
| • | climate change is impacting food production and Australia’s capacity to feed itself |
| • | current food production systems significantly contribute to our ecological footprint. |
We are planning a series of public forums during 2009, culminating in the Summit in October, to prepare the groundwork for developing a NSW Food Policy. The initial focus will be on the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area (Illawarra, Blue Mountains, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West and Central Coast).
These five public forums will be opportunities for local organisations and individuals to identify issues of concern or potential actions that should be considered by the SFFA Food Summit 2009. These forums will be held in the Illawarra, Blue Mountains, Western Sydney, South West Sydney and Central Coast.
| Four issues will be discussed at all three forums: | |
| • | access to healthy food — cost, distribution, local outlets |
| • | planning for healthy food supplies — land use, transport / distribution |
| • | sustainable agriculture — practices, carbon footprint, organics, soil quality |
| • | food safety and health — synthetic inputs, new technologies, healthy diet. |

| The SYDNEY FOOD FAIRNESS ALLIANCE encourages the public, government and business to work together to: | |
| • | improve food security by ensuring all people have physical and economic access to sufficient, healthy and appropriate food |
| • | encourage people to enjoy seasonal, quality food from the region |
| • | encourage the eating of a wide range of foods that support healthy living, especially fruits and vegetables |
| • | build public support for a productive and economically viable Sydney Basin agriculture to our quality of life. |
